The art of painting on porcelain originated in China, where genuine, hard white porcelain was invented. Porcelain is hard, compact and fine-grained, and cannot be scratched by a knife.
It is a tradition in China to paint the porcelain with motives from everyday life. This in praise of things that we normally not give much attention. Often vegetables and fruits such as cabbage, chili, peaches and corn are portrayed. Many of these fruits and vegetables have symbolic meanings.
Creating the porcelain Trollbeads is complex. They begin their life as a thick, liquidy material that consists primarily of kaoline. The mass is shaped and burnt, glazed, and then painted by hand. Then the porcelain bead is burnt and glazed once again.
Preparation is key to success, as the bead shrinks with each turn in the furnace, but while the process is complex and difficult, the results speak for themselves.
Such artistry is beautiful, and our porcelain designers in Jingdezhen, China, are masters of their craft. They’ve specialized not only their technique, but also the motives that are painted upon the porcelain beads.
